Passmore's Picks: Top 10 Symphonies You've NEVER Heard, Nos. 1-3
Updated: May 12
Happy May, friends! This month’s Picks mark the beginning of a new series—my top ten symphonies you’ve never heard :) Don’t worry about the “Concertos You Should Know;” I haven’t forgotten about them. There’s a method to my madness!
The symphonies are organized by number. So, number 1 is Schmidt’s First Symphony, number 2 is Dohnanyi’s Second Symphony, the Symphonie Liturgique is Honegger’s Third, etc., etc. I’ll be rolling out the symphonies in small groups for a total of, you guessed it, ten symphonies :) Let the listening begin!
Franz Schmidt, Symphony in No. 1 in E major (1899)
Performed by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Paavo Jarvi
Ernst von Dohnanyi, Symphony No. 2 in E (1944)
Performed by the BBC Philharmonic and Matthias Bambert
Arthur Honegger, Symphonie Liturgique (1945-46)
Performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan
